2021Division PDW Program: Call for Submissions

The Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) Division invites innovative proposals for pre-conference Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) within the Academy of Management annual meeting, which will be held virtually from 30 July 30–3 August 2021. PDW sessions provide excellent opportunities for exploring emerging research questions or methods, trying out new workshop formats, and fostering conversations on important but understudied phenomena. They can take a variety of formats––methods workshops, tutorials, debates, roundtable discussions, town hall meetings, to name a few––and address ideas or phenomena that might not (yet) fit in the regular program. PDW sessions are also intended for professional development of the participants, so their engagement is essential. We aim for a program of highly innovative, interactive and diverse PDWs. Past TIM PDWs have delved into such topics as digital transformation, ecosystems, emerging business models, external sources of innovation, lean startups, platforms, patent research methods, and technological change. The Technology and Innovation Management Division is a vibrant community of scholars stemming from a variety of fields and disciplines interested in innovation, research and development, and the management of technology-based organizations.

We also invite submissions related to the AOM 2021 conference theme “Bringing the Manager Back in Management.” The conference theme description explicitly mentions TIM-related research on the implications of artificial intelligence, social media, and other emerging technologies on organizations, managers, and employees. Further, technologies, innovations, and processes that can help managers and organizations handle uncertainty are at the core of this year’s theme, and TIM scholars have much to offer here in terms of emerging trends both in research and in practice. Given this year’s virtual format, a challenge will be to design and execute PDWs that deliver meaningful experiences and establish new connections among participants while interacting entirely in the virtual space. To that end, we encourage innovative and inclusive designs that aim to stimulate broad and active participation.

Acceptance of proposals for TIM PDWs will be based on (a) relevance to the interests of the Division's membership; (b) novelty and creativity; and (c) plans for creating an interactive and engaging session. We also welcome proposals that identify other Divisions and Interest Groups as co-sponsors, although that is not a requirement for acceptance.

We look forward to receiving your proposal. Submit your proposal electronically through the AOM Submission Center The submission center will open in early December 2020. Early submissions are encouraged.

The submission deadline is Tuesday, 12 January 2021 at 5:00 PM EST (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).
