2021 Division PDW Program: Call for Submissions

The purpose of the Management Consulting Division is to advance the knowledge and understanding of management consulting and to aid in the development of consultants from the perspectives of research, practice and teaching. The division is focused on the discipline of consulting, as well as the consulting industry with an underlying goal of creating a bridge that integrates scholarship and practice. The Division very much encourages interdisciplinary and integrative approaches related to established and major practice areas of consulting. At the MC division, we strongly believe that to help organizations, research and practice must to be integrated.

To be effective in the field, consultants must not only have a thorough understanding of theory, but also apply it in various contexts, and adapt to changing circumstances, in order to best serve our client organizations. This year’s theme, “Bringing The Manager Back in Management” gives us an opportunity to thoroughly explore what it means to work as management consultants, helping managers prepare for the new and emerging challenges in the exercise of their responsibility.  What appropriate tools, technologies, frameworks, methodologies can be utilized by our clients to help them better understand and resolve the managerial issues and disruptions that confront them, while providing for the sustainability of their organizations?

Members are encouraged to submit workshops that share useful ways to develop management theory from practice with clients, as well as application of management theory in the field.
Thus, you may consider PDW submissions that either address issues in the practice or discipline of management consulting (consulting processes, consulting outcomes, research in the consulting industry, teaching management consulting…), or issues connected with the Annual Meeting theme, for example:

  • How we as scholar-practitioners can build relevant theory from organizational practices that improve their members lives.
  • The consulting methods, tools and approaches we use to communicate and apply theory effectively to improve our clients’ lives.
  • The practices and processes we teach our clients (including students) that contribute to a more inclusive society and the health and well-being of diverse communities.
  • How we collaborate with each other and our client organizations to build solutions (individually or collectively) to ensure the health of the planet and, thereby, improve societal health and well-being.
  • How we help organizations deal with increasing inequity between the “haves” and the “have-nots,” such as employed/unemployed, wealthy/poor, citizen/immigrant/refugee.
  • How we can build “improving lives” into our consulting and teaching practices.
  • In today’s “gig economy,” what we as consultants can do to stay solvent and improve our own and others’ lives.
  • What we as consultants can do to assist our clients leverage digital technology and robotics to better serve the life and well-being of both their customers and their employees.
  • How we as teachers can better prepare our students to work as scholar-practitioners and bridge the interface between theory and practice. 

Evaluation of the submitted PDW proposals will be made based on:

Articulation/ Bridging: Does this proposal explicitly link theory/practice and/or academics/consultants/practitioners?

Impact:  Will this PDW provide immediate usable advice, tools, and templates for our members? Is this PDW enhancing sharing actionable knowledge among participants? What are the implications of applying the knowledge across industries?

Novelty: Does the proposal hold something new? Is there an innovative, provocative and/or interesting take-on the topic, method or format?

Design:  How will the content be presented? How will participants be engaged in the workshop (format, activities, interaction…)? Extra consideration will be given to designs that actively engage the participants. 

The MC Division is highly diverse and globally-oriented, so we welcome and encourage innovative and integrative wide-reaching submissions for PDWs at the 2021 Annual Virtual Meeting. Our division prides itself on welcoming scholars and practitioners, and including both established professionals and students. Submissions from established members of our division, as well as newcomers who are interested in the field of management consulting and research, and/or would like to explore new research issues, are welcomed.  

PDW Proposals must include:

  • Workshop title
  • Full description of the workshop and activities
  • Time requirements of the workshop (shorter workshops preferred)
  • Submitter (contact person) and presenter(s) information, including name, affiliation, address, phone, and e-mail for each person
  • Division or Interest Group sponsor solicited and why
  • Suggested Division or Interest Group co-sponsors (which are highly recommended given the limited time slots we have in the Academy’s overall PDW program)
  • How you intend to create a productive audience interaction and participation
The deadline for submission is Tuesday, 12 January 2021, at 5PM ET (NY time). Submissions should be made online at (open for submissions from early December 2020). Early submissions are encouraged.

Please note that the “Rule of 3” applies to PDW submissions. Therefore, no one can submit or be a part of more than 3 PDW submissions (this is in addition to the Rule of 3 for the main scholarly program).  Note also that having shorter sessions will allow us to have more PDWs, so focusing on delivering quality content in a shorter time frame will be appreciated.
